Carl was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and has been the pastor at Hyland Heights for 20 years. His education includes a B.A. from Louisiana College, and a MDIV from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. His further studies were made at Mid-American Baptist Theological Seminary. His ministry experience includes Latanache Baptist Church in Bachelor, Louisiana, First Baptist Church in Lake Providence, Louisiana, and Unity Baptist Church in Pineville, Louisiana. He and his wife Debby have been married since January 5th, 1975. He has a son Drew, a daughter Heather, and a son-in-law named Jacob and 4 grandchildren. His hobbies include hunting, golf, and scuba diving.
Rick became a member back in 1995 as a lay person and due to a career change, moved to Alabama in 1999. He was called into full time ministry in the spring of 2004 and came on staff here in the fall of that year. Rick acquired a bachelor’s degree in Forest Products from Mississippi State University in December, 1990 and worked in the forest products environmental industry for 12 years. The two years before ministry he worked in the chemical sales industry for water and waste water plants. Rick is married to his high school sweetheart Martha and they have 3 boys Ethan, Caleb, and Josh. They enjoy hunting, fishing, football, soccer, baseball, play station, and leisure drives in the mountains. Rick also enjoys golf and is currently attending seminary through Liberty’s Distance Learning Program.
Paul came to HHBC in September of 1994. In 1997 he was hired as full-time staff with the oversight of adult ministries. Paul is trained in counseling, theology and psychology. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1994 followed by two Master degrees in Religion and Christian Theology in 1998. In 2007 he completed his Doctor of Ministry degree with a concentration in pastoral counseling. Several months later he pursued a Masters Degree in Licensed Professional Counseling and completed that in 2010. Currently, he has completed the requirements for state licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). He is the developer of the Hyland Heights Counseling Center which ministers to the church and community in various areas of counseling. Paul also works with Christian Counseling Services of Lynchburg. His current duties at the church are the oversight of the counseling center as well as individual programs for the church body.
David Dalton is the senior ranking staff member at HHBC, having just celebrated 20 years of service as Minister of Music. He oversees all aspects of music at Hyland Heights , including the children’s choir, praise team, orchestra and adult choir. He is also the founder and director of The Lynchburg Living Cross, a HHBC music and drama presentation that reaches thousands of people each year during Easter. Under David’s leadership, the Sanctuary Choir has grown from a handful to over 90 members. For the past two years the choir has also provided a musical package for the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia’s annual meeting in Richmond and Roanoke. David holds a BS degree in Sacred Music from Liberty University and is an accomplished pianist, soloist, and trombonist. He and his wife, Shelby, have been married for 30 years and have two sons Brian (wife Jessica) and Seth.
Although born in Minnesota, Brian was raised and lived in Lynchburg throughout his school years and early adult life. Brian graduated from Liberty University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in Pastoral Ministries and Youth Ministry. After taking a year off to work and marry his lovely wife, Nancy, Brian continued his education by earning a Master of Divinity at Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in May of 1996. He began his full-time ministry with students while in Seminary as an Assistant High School Pastor at Thomas Road Baptist Church. Upon graduation, Brian followed God’s leading to fill the position of Associate Pastor of Students at Lizella Baptist Church in Lizella, GA. After eleven years of service God called Brian and his family back to Lynchburg as the Senior High Pastor and Director of Student Ministries at HHBC. Brian and Nancy have three wonderful children, Brandon, Emily, and Katie. Brian enjoys soccer, the martial arts, Frisbee golf, reading, and hanging out with his friends and students.
Mike is the Children’s Pastor at Hyland Heights Baptist Church. He has been attending the church for 25 years and has been on staff since 1998. Mike has been married to his wife Amy since 1998 and they have three children, Christian, Amber, and Brennan. Mike is 1995 graduate of Liberty University where he earned a degree in elementary education. In December of 2008, Mike earned his masters degree from Liberty Baptist Theological seminary. Mike believes that children are the future and that it is essential to provide quality Christ centered programming for the children of Hyland Heights. His hobbies include traveling and cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Besides being the Children’s Pastor, Mike is also an adjunct professor at Liberty University and a part-time consultant for Standard publishing.
Kathy graduated from Heritage High School and attended CVCC. She is an administrative assistant to our Sr. Pastor and has been with HHBC for nine years. She came to us with 18 years of office experience. She’s been married to her high school sweetheart, Gary for 36 years. Their family includes a daughter, Mandy (son-in-law Shane), grandaughter Savannah, one son, Gary (daughter-in-law Nicole) and one cat. Her interests include music, interior design and quilting.
Alisa began as our church bookkeeper in 2007. She came to HHBC with 25 years of experience in accounting and finances. Alisa attended CVCC. She is married to Steve and they have two grown sons, Jonathan (wife Christy) and Jeremy (wife Stacey). In her free time she enjoys walking, hiking, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.
Josh joined our staff full time in June 2016 after serving as the sound technician for over two years. He was raised in Gladys, VA on a family farm, where he has now built his own home. He and his wife, Krystal, met in high school and married in 2007 just before their last year of college. They now have two children and are very involved here at HHBC. Josh believes that technology is a highly impactful ministry tool that can reach people with the gospel of Christ. However, he believes that being genuine and intentional with people is much more impactful, as that is how Christ lived.
Carmen has served as the Nursery Director at HHBC since June 2005 and coordinates all childcare at the church. She has a B.S. degree in Business from Liberty University. She and her husband Jay have been married for 19 years and attending HHBC for over 20 years. They have 3 sons, Brandon, Jacob & Tyler. Carmen enjoys reading, running and spending time with friends and her family.
Janet became Admin Asst in our Student Ministries Center in 2006. She comes to us with 12+ years office experience from Liberty University. In January 2008, she became Admin Asst in the main office in addition to her Tuesday hours in the Student Ministries Center. She and her husband Raleigh own Raleigh Signs, Inc. where she assists with bookkeeping. She holds a B.A. degree from Maranatha Baptist Bible College. In her free time, she enjoys reading, walking, growing flowers, and time with family - husband Raleigh, 4 adult children, 3 children-in-law, and 13 grandchildren, plus a Shih Tzu dog Oreo.
Lee came to HHBC in 2010. His education includes a B.S. in Business from Liberty University and a M.A. in Christian Ministry: Discipleship & Church Ministry from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. Lee has been married to his wife Taran since 2004, and they have three children: Laine, Noah, and Gibbs. His hobbies include fly fishing, soccer, and hunting. In addition to being the Preteen Director, Lee is also a Quality Assurance Analyst for Liberty University.
Michael grew up in Gladys, VA and moved to Maine in 2002. He returned to Virginia in 2007 and started to work at Hyland Heights Baptist Church at the beginning of 2008. He has been a Graphic artist since 1993. He has a lovely wife named Sarah and sons named Eli and Gabriel. He also has two daughters named Annelise and Isla.
Jerry has been the facilities manager since Feb 2007. He has been a member of HHBC since 1986. Jerry & Joann have been married for 33 yrs and have three sons: Jason (Kim), Joshua (Sandy), and Joseph. He is a deacon, and has been the Awana Commander at HHBC. He has been in every Living Cross except one. Jerry enjoys sports and hunting.
Suzanne has been a member of HHBC since 2002 and employed since 2010. She works with the Awana Sparks program and also helps with the 252 childrens group. Suzanne and husband Lawrence have been married since 1993 and have 3 sons, LB, Lucas and Logan. Suzanne enjoys reading, scrapbooking and spending time with family.
I was born in Virginia and lived in Campbell County all my life. I attended Altavista High School and graduated in 2004. I have been married since 2004 to my wife Sandi East and have two kids, Jordan and Kamerin, My full time job is an Assistant Shift Leader with the Blue Ridge Regional Jail Authority in Rustburg, VA. Me and my wife have been attending church all of our lives. I attended New Prospect Baptist Church in Hurt, VA as a child all the way through high school. We had been attending HHBC off and on for a while and in 2014 we made this our church home and have been loving it every since. My hobbies are fishing, watching sports and movies, helping out with the food pantry and spending time with my family.
Sheri has been a member of Forest Baptist Church since 1998 and employed at HHBC since August. She works with the Youth Group at FBC and teaches 7th and 8th grade Sunday School with her husband. Sheri and husband Terry have been married since 1986 and have 2 grown children, Melissa and Nick. She is the sister of Suzanne Burley. Sheri enjoys reading and spending time with family and friends.
Lee has been on staff since 2008 and serves in several capacities. Currently, he directs our Adult Bible Fellowships (Sunday School), leads our visitation teams which help people connect with the church, and coordinates our Spring and Fall Bible studies. In addition, he also cleans our Children’s Ministry area each week for Children’s Sunday School and our Child Development Center. He and his wife Donna, married since 1978, have been members of Hyland Heights since 1990 and lead one of our adult classes. Lee earned a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree from Liberty University and the seminary. He has also completed coursework towards a Doctor of Ministry. Lee and Donna have four children and twelve grandchildren.
Doreen Close was born and raised in Salem, Ohio. She graduated from Heidelberg College with a B.S. degree in Education. She currently teaches 6th & 7th grade Language Arts at Altavista Combined School. She absolutely loves kids and enjoys being the Preschool Director for HHBC. Doreen married her high school sweetheart, Dave, and they have been married for 23 years. They have 2 active boys, Tony & Arren. She enjoys spending time with her family & friends, visiting relatives, and going on vacations!
Theresa Peterson has been a member for almost 19 years. She has served as our preschool director for 7 years. She realised at a young age the Lord was leading her to work with young children and to study Early Childhood Education. She has been married to Ed for 26 years. The rest of her amazing family includes Jacob(22), Luke(20), Shelby(18) and Michael(11). Theresa enjoys serving at HHBC, fellowshipping, reading, walking, and travel.
Jackson Richardson was born in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, but was raised in a number of different states, spending a large part of his early life living in Reading, Pennsylvania. Jackson has lived in Lynchburg since 2012. Graduating from Liberty University in 2016 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Church Ministries specializing in Youth Ministry and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a specialization in Human Resources, Jackson hopes to pursue continuing education in seminary. Jackson is marrying his best friend, Ellie, in September of 2016. He loves to work with students and to help them grow into authentic Christ-followers, and in his free time, Jackson enjoys playing a variety of instruments, exercising, backpacking, and woodworking.
Tiana Schiferl was born in Albuquerque, NM but coming from a military family moved around to different states until she finally moved to Yorktown, VA. Tiana graduated from Liberty University in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science in Religion with a specialization in Youth Ministry, and from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in 2015 with a Master of Arts in Theological Studies. During her time at Liberty she served in the student ministry at Hyland Heights. Upon finishing Seminary she moved to Lynchburg permanently to serve as the Girls Ministry Director for Hyland. Tiana loves being active and playing soccer, and enjoys the outdoors through hiking, rock climbing, and camping.
Sean Best was born and raised in Frederick, Maryland. He was pursuing a medical degree until God called him into full-time ministry. Sean transferred to Liberty University in 2013 and graduated in May of 2016 with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Church Ministries specializing in Youth Ministry. Sean is currently pursuing his Masters of Arts in Religion at Liberty Seminary in the School of Divinity as well as coaching Varsity Boys soccer at Brookville High School. Sean enjoys playing guitar, soccer, and hanging out with friends in his free time.
