Carl was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and has been the pastor at Hyland Heights for 20 years. His education includes a B.A. from Louisiana College, and a MDIV from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. His further studies were made at Mid-American Baptist Theological Seminary. His ministry experience includes Latanache Baptist Church in Bachelor, Louisiana, First Baptist Church in Lake Providence, Louisiana, and Unity Baptist Church in Pineville, Louisiana. He and his wife Debby have been married since January 5th, 1975. He has a son Drew, a daughter-in-law named Crystal, a daughter Heather, and a son-in-law named Jacob and 4 grandchildren. His hobbies include hunting, golf, and scuba diving.
Rick became a member back in 1995 as a lay person and due to a career change, moved to Alabama in 1999. He was called into full time ministry in the spring of 2004 and came on staff here in the fall of that year. Rick acquired a bachelor’s degree in Forest Products from Mississippi State University in December, 1990 and worked in the forest products environmental industry for 12 years. The two years before ministry he worked in the chemical sales industry for water and waste water plants. Rick is married to his high school sweetheart Martha and they have 3 boys Ethan, Caleb, and Josh. They enjoy hunting, fishing, football, soccer, baseball, play station, and leisure drives in the mountains. Rick also enjoys golf and is currently attending seminary through Liberty’s Distance Learning Program.
Paul came to HHBC in September of 1994. In 1997 he was hired as full-time staff with the oversight of adult ministries. Paul is trained in counseling, theology and psychology. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 1994 followed by two Master degrees in Religion and Christian Theology in 1998. In 2007 he completed his Doctor of Ministry degree with a concentration in pastoral counseling. Several months later he pursued a Masters Degree in Licensed Professional Counseling and completed that in 2010. Currently, he has completed the requirements for state licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). He is the developer of the Hyland Heights Counseling Center which ministers to the church and community in various areas of counseling. Paul also works with Christian Counseling Services of Lynchburg. His current duties at the church are the oversight of the counseling center as well as individual programs for the church body.
Marvin Became a member of HHBC June, 1976. Marvin worked with the 7 & 8 year old boys for several years, which are now grown with families. In 1984 HHBC ordained Marvin as a minister of the Gospel, which led him to be commissioned chaplain in a home mission ministry to the truck drivers. In 1998, Marvin began pastoring at First Southern Baptist Church in Hurt, VA & resigned in 2004 because of cancer. He returned to HHBC in February of 2004 to be our Senior Adult Pastor & claim the “Grand Father” title to the staff & office friends. Marvin and Marie will be married 63 years in August. They have 5 children, 11 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren.
David Dalton is the senior ranking staff member at HHBC, having just celebrated 20 years of service as Minister of Music. He oversees all aspects of music at Hyland Heights , including the children’s choir, praise team, orchestra and adult choir. He is also the founder and director of The Lynchburg Living Cross, a HHBC music and drama presentation that reaches thousands of people each year during Easter. Under David’s leadership, the Sanctuary Choir has grown from a handful to over 90 members. For the past two years the choir has also provided a musical package for the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia’s annual meeting in Richmond and Roanoke. David holds a BS degree in Sacred Music from Liberty University and is an accomplished pianist, soloist, and trombonist. He and his wife, Shelby, have been married for 30 years and have two sons Brian (wife Jessica) and Seth.
Although born in Minnesota, Brian was raised and lived in Lynchburg throughout his school years and early adult life. Brian graduated from Liberty University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in Pastoral Ministries and Youth Ministry. After taking a year off to work and marry his lovely wife, Nancy, Brian continued his education by earning a Master of Divinity at Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in May of 1996. He began his full-time ministry with students while in Seminary as an Assistant High School Pastor at Thomas Road Baptist Church. Upon graduation, Brian followed God’s leading to fill the position of Associate Pastor of Students at Lizella Baptist Church in Lizella, GA. After eleven years of service God called Brian and his family back to Lynchburg as the Senior High Pastor and Director of Student Ministries at HHBC. Brian and Nancy have three wonderful children, Brandon, Emily, and Katie. Brian enjoys soccer, the martial arts, Frisbee golf, reading, and hanging out with his friends and students.
Mike is the Children’s Pastor at Hyland Heights Baptist Church. He has been attending the church for 25 years and has been on staff since 1998. Mike has been married to his wife Amy since 1998 and they have three children, Christian, Amber, and Brennan. Mike is 1995 graduate of Liberty University where he earned a degree in elementary education. In December of 2008, Mike earned his masters degree from Liberty Baptist Theological seminary. Mike believes that children are the future and that it is essential to provide quality Christ centered programming for the children of Hyland Heights. His hobbies include traveling and cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Besides being the Children’s Pastor, Mike is also an adjunct professor at Liberty University and a part-time consultant for Standard publishing.
Kathy graduated from Heritage High School and attended CVCC. She is an administrative assistant to our Sr. Pastor and has been with HHBC for nine years. She came to us with 18 years of office experience. She’s been married to her high school sweetheart, Gary for 36 years. Their family includes a daughter, Mandy (son-in-law Shane), grandaughter Savannah, one son, Gary (daughter-in-law Nicole) and one cat. Her interests include music, interior design and quilting.
Alisa began as our church bookkeeper in 2007. She came to HHBC with 25 years of experience in accounting and finances. Alisa attended CVCC. She is married to Steve and they have two grown sons, Jonathan (wife Christy) and Jeremy (wife Stacey). In her free time she enjoys walking, hiking, cooking, and spending time with family and friends.
Jo Jo was born and raised in Amherst County, and graduated from Amherst County High School, Phillips Business College and Central Virginia Community College. She worked for a coal mining company, radio station, attorney and real estate settlement service before coming to Hyland Heights in May, 2005, as Admin for the Children’s Ministry and Music Director. Her family consists of 3 daughters, 2 sons-in-law, and two granddaughters and one grandson. Her free time is spent with her family and friends, church activities including choir, and working with Amherst County Dixie Youth Girls Softball and the Amherst County Parks and Recreation Department.
Janet became Admin Asst in our Student Ministries Center in 2006. She comes to us with 12+ years office experience from Liberty University. In January 2008, she became Admin Asst in the main office in addition to her Tuesday hours in the Student Ministries Center. She and her husband Raleigh own Raleigh Signs, Inc. where she assists with bookkeeping. She holds a B.A. degree from Maranatha Baptist Bible College. In her free time, she enjoys reading, walking, growing flowers, and time with family - husband Raleigh, 4 adult children, 3 children-in-law, and 13 grandchildren, plus a Shih Tzu dog Oreo.
Michael grew up in Gladys, VA and moved to Maine in 2002. He returned to Virginia in 2007 and started to work at Hyland Heights Baptist Church at the beginning of 2008. He has been a Graphic artist since 1993. He has a lovely wife named Sarah and sons named Eli and Gabriel. He also has a daughter named Annelise.
Jerry has been the facilities manager since Feb 2007. He has been a member of HHBC since 1986. Jerry & Joann have been married for 33 yrs and have three sons: Jason (Kim), Joshua (Sandy), and Joseph. He is a deacon, and has been the Awana Commander at HHBC. He has been in every Living Cross except one. Jerry enjoys sports and hunting.
Steve grew up in Hurt, VA and graduated from Gretna High School in 1976. He married Alisa in 1998. Steve has been blessed with 2 sons; Jonathan is married to Christy and their son's name is Noah and Jeremy is married to Stacey and their daughter's name is Olivia. Steve retired from Abbott Laboratories in March 2010 with 29 years of service. He has been working for HHBC since March 2010. Steve and Alisa started attending Hyland Heights in March 2004 and joined the church August 2004. In his spare time, Steve enjoys swimming, gardening and spending time with his wife and family, especially loves his time with Noah and Olivia.
Suzanne has been a member of HHBC for 11 years and employeed since 2010. She works with the Awana Sparks program and also helps with the 252 childrens group. Suzanne and husband, Lawrence have been married for 21 years and have 3 sons, LB(14), Lucas(11) and Logan(8). Suzanne enjoys reading, scrapbooking and spending time with family
I'm Stephen Lipka, I have been raised in 3 countries and 2 states through out my life. I have found my calling in life, to preach and teach kids about what God has done for me and what He can do for them. I went to school at Liberty University studies in Biblical Studies specializing in Children and Youth Ministries. I love working with the 5th and 6th graders of HHBC, and making an impact in their lives. My wife and I live in Rustburg, with our lovable dog Tucker. Outside of Church I enjoy spending time with my family, being bald, traveling and turning a wrench on my car.
Studying Criminal Justice and Child Psychology at Liberty University. Someday I want to work with troubled children and youth in wilderness intervention and rehab programs Served in the Army for 7 years and did two tours overseas in Iraq. I absolutely love the children of HHBC and it is a complete honor to be a part of the awesome children's ministry program we have. I Love sports(Steelers, Duke, and the Braves), the outdoors, camping, hunting, fishing, and shooting.
Carmen has served as the Nursery Director at HHBC since June 2005 and coordinates all childcare at the church. She has a B.S. degree in Business from Liberty University. She and her husband Jay have been married for 19 years and attending HHBC for over 20 years. They have 3 sons, Brandon, Jacob & Tyler. Carmen enjoys reading, running and spending time with friends and her family.
Theresa Peterson has been a member for almost 19 years. She has served as our preschool director for 7 years. She realised at a young age the Lord was leading her to work with young children and to study Early Childhood Education. She has been married to Ed for 26 years. The rest of her amazing family includes Jacob(22), Luke(20), Shelby(18) and Michael(11). Theresa enjoys serving at HHBC, fellowshipping, reading, walking, and travel.
Doreen Close was born and raised in Salem, Ohio. She graduated from Heidelberg College with a B.S. degree in Education. She currently teaches 6th & 7th grade Language Arts at Altavista Combined School. She absolutely loves kids and enjoys being the Preschool Director for HHBC. Doreen married her high school sweetheart, Dave, and they have been married for 23 years. They have 2 active boys, Tony & Arren. She enjoys spending time with her family & friends, visiting relatives, and going on vacations!
Meghan Burks was born and raised in Lynchburg, VA and has attend Hyland Heights since she was seven years old. She is pursuing a degree in Woman’s Ministry with a minor in Computer Design. Meghan is a graduate of the Word of Life Bible Institute in Florida. She loves to create ideas that welcome new-comers while making the Student Ministry Center an inviting place for all. She uses that passion to develop ideas for the Technical aspect of the Student Ministries. She likes to spend her spare time with family and friends.
